宗教大同推進問答

Foreword

Translated by Dr. WEN-CHEN JAU

Great philosophers guide people's way of thinking from generations to generations, since early in the human history. Socrates of Europe and Fu Hsi of China, are the founders of western and eastern culture. At that time, there are no religions. Later on, Hsuan-Yuan of China taught people marriage and societal systems, which was called Religion of Morality, Polytheism, Monotheism, Brahmans, etc., developed at different places and within different races. The major religions now in the world are Buddhism, Taoism, Confucianism, Christianity and Islam. Back then, the religions have no fractional views against one another. Afterward, different sects were established by the followers at different places and era, due to the difference in the interpretation of the teaching of religion. However, religions are all mercy and teach people to live in harmony and to understand the true meaning of life. If there are fights, then there is no mercy. The founding of this Society is intended to minimize the friction and finally reach a world-wide harmony with the cosmos. This Society adopts the basic and fundamental doctrines of every religion, and is in harmony with one another. This is, in terms of Buddhism, "non-self, non-others", (unbias and be objective, do not judge by looking, appearance or presentation). Buddha is sympathetic toward all creatures. Buddha, besides being a name, stands for the universal rule.

According to Daoism, the Big Dao, or the Rule, has no names and cannot be described with words. It just exists in the cosmos. Since it is so hard to name, we merely call it Dao, the Rule or Buddha.

Before human beings appeared in the world, no created things had names. If we want to call a tree a "man" or to call a man a "tree", it seems to be all right. Similarly we may call a man a "woman" and name a woman a "man". Therefore a name is just an identity. It has nothing to do with the judgement of good or bad, right or wrong. Buddha said, "if there is nothing related to the cycle of cause and effect (law of casualty), there is nothing bothering me, and peace should be there (and there will be no reincarnation.)" Peace is supposed to be pure and simple; otherwise conflicts will come up. The problems we are facing is that we do not have one universal rule. We have so many sects; as a consequence of that, it leads to so many religious wars.

Christianity is divided into quite a few dispatches, such as the Roman Catholic Church and the Gospel Church. In China, people have Hang Study and Sung Study. Buddhism is also split into Tien-Tai Sect, Jing-Tu Sect, Mi Sect and etc.. Daoism also has Chuang Sect, Lao Sect and Long-Meng Sect. One may prefer a certain sect; others may like another sect better. Nevertheless, it is hard to tell which sect is really better than the others and we still cannot solve the fundamental riddle of life and death. Despite so many religions, people still feel confused and aimless, struggling bitterly during their journey of life.

Therefore, we created this organization to enlighten people. We believe that Dao or the Rule should not be described as good or bad, right or wrong. If one applies it properly, it turns out great. If it is misused, the result will certainly be awful. For example, the atomic energy may be used to explode earth (bad) or to treat patients (good), depending on how one uses it.

All religious doctrines focus on goodness rather than evil. Thus there should be neither good religions nor evil sects. Different religions had prospered in different regions, developing different rituals and different languages. But basically their teachings are similar. For example, all human beings love life and hate death, yearning for goodness and avoiding evil. If people resist this peace-loving nature, they will destroy themselves and the world as well. In the past, however, religious strifes have already cost numerous lives. Thus our organization brings forward the concept of religious peace so as to save the world and more lives.

If the followers of every sect return to the original teachings of their religions, they will find that kindness is the most important rule for all the religions and that they should open their mind to different voices.

Being a religious group, we aim at promoting religious peace among different religions and ceasing any future wars for sakes of religions and respect of lives.
